NVIDIA RTX 5090 "Blackwell" Founders Edition to Implement the "RTX 4090 Ti" Cinderblock Design

NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition graphics card may implement a design closely resembling the cinder block product design the company readied for its RTX 4090 Ti graphics card that never materialized into a marketable product. This sees a 4-slot thick board design, with a slender main logic PCB arranged along the plane of the motherboard, on top of which the cooling solution is mounted perpendicular to the plane, as shown in the images below. This main logic board contains the GPU, memory, and VRM. There two additional PCBs—one has the display I/O, and the other has the PCIe interface. There is a fourth disaggregated component, the 12V-2x6 receptacle, located somewhere along the top of the cooling solution.

Confirmation of NVIDIA using the RTX 4090 Ti "cinder block" board design for the RTX 5090 comes from kopite7kimi, a reliable source with NVIDIA leaks. Kopite7kimi mentions a card that has a "Main Board, IO Rigid Board and a separate PCIE slot component (perhaps it should not be considered as the third PCB)," which perfectly describes with the RTX 4090 Ti. NVIDIA had completed the design phase of this card, which made it to its cooling solution OEM (which is likely where the images leaked out from). The company probably decided against launching this product because the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX fell significantly short of the performance proposition of the RTX 4090.

The XMG PRO 16 Studio is receiving a significant upgrade as part of a model update. NVIDIA Announces Financial Results for 1Q Fiscal 2025, Data Center Revenue Now 10x Gaming Revenue

NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) today reported revenue for the first quarter ended April 28, 2024, of $26.0 billion, up 18% from the previous quarter and up 262% from a year ago. For the quarter, GAAP earnings per diluted share was $5.98, up 21% from the previous quarter and up 629% from a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share was $6.12, up 19% from the previous quarter and up 461% from a year ago. "The next industrial revolution has begun—companies and countries are partnering with NVIDIA to shift the trillion-dollar traditional data centers to accelerated computing and build a new type of data center—AI factories—to produce a new commodity: artificial intelligence," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. "AI will bring significant productivity gains to nearly every industry and help companies be more cost- and energy-efficient, while expanding revenue opportunities.

"Our data center growth was fueled by strong and accelerating demand for generative AI training and inference on the Hopper platform. Beyond cloud service providers, generative AI has expanded to consumer internet companies, and enterprise, sovereign AI, automotive and healthcare customers, creating multiple multibillion-dollar vertical markets. "We are poised for our next wave of growth. The Blackwell platform is in full production and forms the foundation for trillion-parameter-scale generative AI. Spectrum-X opens a brand-new market for us to bring large-scale AI to Ethernet-only data centers. Qualcomm's Success with Windows AI PC Drawing NVIDIA Back to the Client SoC Business

NVIDIA is eying a comeback to the client processor business, reveals a Bloomberg interview with the CEOs of NVIDIA and Dell. For NVIDIA, all it takes is a simple driver update that exposes every GeForce GPU with tensor cores as an NPU to Windows 11, with translation layers to get popular client AI apps to work with TensorRT. But that would need you to have a discrete NVIDIA GPU. What about the vast market of Windows AI PCs powered by the likes of Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD, who each sell 15 W-class processors with integrated NPUs capable of 50 AI TOPS, which is all that Copilot+ needs? NVIDIA held an Arm license for decades now, and makes Arm-based CPUs to this day, with the NVIDIA Grace, however, that is a large server processor meant for its AI GPU servers.

NVIDIA already made client processors under the Tegra brand targeting smartphones, which it winded down last decade. It's since been making Drive PX processors for its automotive self-driving hardware division; and of course there's Grace. NVIDIA hinted that it might have a client CPU for the AI PC market in 2025. In the interview Bloomberg asked NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang a pointed question on whether NVIDIA has a place in the AI PC market. Dell CEO Michael Dell, who was also in the interview, interjected "come back next year," to which Jensen affirmed "exactly." Dell would be in a front-and-center position to know if NVIDIA is working on a new PC processor for launch in 2025, and Jensen's nod almost confirms this

GALAX Intros Classic Series Graphics Cards Based on RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 Ti SUPER

GALAX introduced the Classic line of graphics cards based on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER and the RTX 4070 SUPER. These cards are designed with lateral-blower coolers, and a strictly 2-slot thickness, making them fit for workstations or graphics rendering servers with multiple cards in them. Both cards share a common board design, consisting of an aluminium channel-type heatsink that relies on a lateral blower for ventilation, which always stays on. This card pulls air from either sides of the PCB, and the card's backplate doesn't extend over the region of the PCB with the fan, to maximize clearance for the neighboring card.

The aluminium channel heatsink of this card extends through the entire thickness of the card, and pops out of the cooler shroud, GTX 480-style. The rear I/O bracket has large vents for the cooler to exhaust from. Display connectors include three DisplayPort 1.4, and an HDMI 2.1. Power is drawn from a 16-pin 12VHPWR connector located at the tail end of the card. The RTX 4070 SUPER comes with 7,168 CUDA cores across 56 SM; while the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER has 8,448 CUDA cores across 66 SM. Both cards stick to NVIDIA reference clock speeds for their respective GPUs. The company didn't reveal pricing.

New Performance Optimizations Supercharge NVIDIA RTX AI PCs for Gamers, Creators and Developers

NVIDIA today announced at Microsoft Build new AI performance optimizations and integrations for Windows that help deliver maximum performance on NVIDIA GeForce RTX AI PCs and NVIDIA RTX workstations. Large language models (LLMs) power some of the most exciting new use cases in generative AI and now run up to 3x faster with ONNX Runtime (ORT) and DirectML using the new NVIDIA R555 Game Ready Driver. ORT and DirectML are high-performance tools used to run AI models locally on Windows PCs.

WebNN, an application programming interface for web developers to deploy AI models, is now accelerated with RTX via DirectML, enabling web apps to incorporate fast, AI-powered capabilities. And PyTorch will support DirectML execution backends, enabling Windows developers to train and infer complex AI models on Windows natively. NVIDIA and Microsoft are collaborating to scale performance on RTX GPUs. These advancements build on NVIDIA's world-leading AI platform, which accelerates more than 500 applications and games on over 100 million RTX AI PCs and workstations worldwide.

AMD Said to be Planning Taiwan R&D Center

According to the Taiwan Central News Agency AMD is considering opening up an R&D center in Taiwan. AMD is said to have applied with the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) as part of Taiwan's "A+ global R&D and innovation partnership program" to set up a new R&D facility. The government partnership program covers three types of fields, namely AI, new-generation semiconductors including high-power and high-frequency ICs, and new 5G network structures and it's aiming for both local and international businesses to set up new R&D centers. AMD has yet to announce any plans about the potential R&D center and the MOEA has declined to share any details with local media in Taiwan.

However, an unnamed source with inside knowledge in the matter has revealed that AMD is looking at investing around NT$5 billion (~US$155 million), based on the application. The same source also mentioned that the MOEA has stipulated conditions that AMD has to meet, which among other things involves working with local IC design companies to help further develop Taiwan's IC design industry, working with local companies to produce servers with AI chips and working with local universities to cultivate talent. Furthermore, the MOEA is said to have asked AMD to recruit at least 20 percent of its R&D centre workforce from outside of Taiwan, to avoid competing with local companies for staff. AMD could be making an announcement about the R&D center at Computex, but it's worth keeping in mind that these things take time. Back in 2021, NVIDIA announced that it would set up an R&D center in Taiwan, but with a much bigger budget of NT$24.3 billion plus a government subsidy of a further NT$6.7 billion. NVIDIA has as yet to announce the opening of its Taiwan R&D center.

NVIDIA GeForce 555.85 WHQL Drivers Released

NVIDIA released the latest version of its GeForce Game Ready drivers. Version 555.85 WHQL comes with optimization for Hellblade II: Senua's Saga; F1 24, XDefiant, and Serum. The optimization for F1 24 includes support for DLSS 3 Frame Generation, DLAA (in DLSS 2 mode); Reflex, and ray tracing effects. The support for Hellblade II: Senua's Saga gives you DLSS 3 Frame Generation and Reflex support. Meanwhile, Serum gets DLSS 3 Frame Generation, DLAA, and Reflex support. Lastly, XDefiant, the arena/MOBA from Ubisoft, gets support for Reflex.

The GeForce 555.85 WHQL drivers also add GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App optimal settings for Bellwright, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut, Homeworld 3, and
Infection Free Zone. The list of newly validated G-SYNC compatible displays grows with 11 new display models spanning ASUS, Dell, Philips, IO-Data, and LG. Among the issues fixed with this release include a random crash during gameplay with Tekken 8 on GTX 10-series "Pascal" graphics cards; a lower-than-expected GPU utilization with Horizon Forbidden West when Reflex is used in conjunction with Boost; and a bug with Blender Cycles that causes motion blur to incorrectly render on some GPU generations. HBM3e Production Surge Expected to Make Up 35% of Advanced Process Wafer Input by End of 2024

TrendForce reports that the three largest DRAM suppliers are increasing wafer input for advanced processes. Following a rise in memory contract prices, companies have boosted their capital investments, with capacity expansion focusing on the second half of this year. It is expected that wafer input for 1alpha nm and above processes will account for approximately 40% of total DRAM wafer input by the end of the year.

HBM production will be prioritized due to its profitability and increasing demand. However, limited yields of around 50-60% and a wafer area 60% larger than DRAM products mean a higher proportion of wafer input is required. Based on the TSV capacity of each company, HBM is expected to account for 35% of advanced process wafer input by the end of this year, with the remaining wafer capacity used for LPDDR5(X) and DDR5 products.

NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti SUPER with 26 Gbps G6X Mod Beats RTX 4080

The graphics card modders from Brazil, TecLab and Paulo Gomes are back with yet another audacious, competitive VGA mod. The duo has already built a reputation for video memory replacement mods that have significantly altered the performance profile of graphics cards, and their latest feat sees an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER graphics card get a bit of a memory upgrade. Out of the box, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER comes with 16 GB of 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory across the 256-bit wide memory interface of the "AD103" GPU. The two tech-tubers each performed memory chip replacement mods, which in combination with GPU overclocking, resulted in memory speeds ranging between 24 Gbps and 26 Gbps. The big story here is that with faster memory, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER beats the RTX 4080, despite 13% fewer shaders and other key components.

A stock GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card scores 8525 points in the Unigine Superposition 8K benchmark, and a stock-speed Manli RTX 4070 Ti SUPER does 7212 points, on account of fewer shaders (66 SM vs. 76 SM) and slower memory (21 Gbps vs. 22.4 Gbps). With a 24 Gbps memory speed mod, and GPU overclocking, Paulo Gomes achieved 8870 points in the test for the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, beating the RTX 4080, and overcoming the shader deficit. Meanwhile, over at TecLab, their Galax-branded RTX 4070 Ti SUPER yields 7028 points at stock speeds; and the team pulled off an epic 26 Gbps memory speed (chip replacement + overclocking), which when combined with some GPU overclocking, yielded a staggering 9133 points, which would inch close to what an RTX 4080 SUPER could produce with its 23 Gbps memory and maxed out "AD103" ASIC with all 80 SM on deck.

NVIDIA Blackwell GB200 Superchip to Cost up to 70,000 US Dollars

According to analysts at HSBC, NVIDIA's upcoming Blackwell GPUs for AI workloads are expected to carry premium pricing significantly higher than the company's current Hopper-based processors. The analysts estimate that NVIDIA's "entry-level" Blackwell GPU, the B100, will have an average selling price between $30,000 and $35,000 per chip. That's already on par with the flagship H100 GPU from the previous Hopper generation. But the real premium lies with the top-end GB200 "superchip" that combines a Grace CPU with two enhanced B200 GPUs. HSBC analysts peg pricing for this monster chip at a staggering $60,000 to $70,000 per unit. NVIDIA may opt to primarily sell complete servers powered by Blackwell rather than individual chips. The estimates suggest a fully-loaded GB200 NVL72 server with 72 GB200 Superchips could fetch around $3 million.

The sky-high pricing continues NVIDIA's aggressive strategy of charging a premium for its leading AI and accelerator hardware. With rivals like AMD and Intel still lagging in this space, NVIDIA can essentially name its price for now. The premium pricing reflects the massive performance uplift promised by Blackwell. A single GB200 Superchip is rated for five PetaFLOPs at TF32 of AI compute power with sparsity, a 5x increase over the H100's one PetaFLOP. Of course, actual street pricing will depend on volume and negotiating power. Hyperscalers like Amazon and Microsoft may secure significant discounts, while smaller players could pay even more than these eye-watering analyst projections. NVIDIA is betting that the industry's insatiable demand for more AI compute power will make these premium price tags palatable, at least for a while. But it's also raising the stakes for competitors to catch up quickly before losing too much ground.

NVIDIA Grace Hopper Ignites New Era of AI Supercomputing

Driving a fundamental shift in the high-performance computing industry toward AI-powered systems, NVIDIA today announced nine new supercomputers worldwide are using NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips to speed scientific research and discovery. Combined, the systems deliver 200 exaflops, or 200 quintillion calculations per second, of energy-efficient AI processing power.

New Grace Hopper-based supercomputers coming online include EXA1-HE, in France, from CEA and Eviden; Helios at Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet, in Poland, from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE); Alps at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, from HPE; JUPITER at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, in Germany; DeltaAI at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; and Miyabi at Japan's Joint Center for Advanced High Performance Computing - established between the Center for Computational Sciences at the University of Tsukuba and the Information Technology Center at the University of Tokyo.

NVIDIA Accelerates Quantum Computing Centers Worldwide With CUDA-Q Platform

NVIDIA today announced that it will accelerate quantum computing efforts at national supercomputing centers around the world with the open-source NVIDIA CUDA-Q platform. Supercomputing sites in Germany, Japan and Poland will use the platform to power the quantum processing units (QPUs) inside their NVIDIA-accelerated high-performance computing systems.

QPUs are the brains of quantum computers that use the behavior of particles like electrons or photons to calculate differently than traditional processors, with the potential to make certain types of calculations faster. Germany's Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum Jülich is installing a QPU built by IQM Quantum Computers as a complement to its JUPITER supercomputer, supercharged by the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip. The ABCI-Q supercomputer, located at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan, is designed to advance the nation's quantum computing initiative. Powered by the NVIDIA Hopper architecture, the system will add a QPU from QuEra. Poland's Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) has recently installed two photonic QPUs, built by ORCA Computing, connected to a new supercomputer partition accelerated by NVIDIA Hopper.

According to Benchlife.info insiders, NVIDIA is supposedly in the phase of testing designs with various Total Graphics Power (TGP), running from 250 Watts to 600 Watts, for its upcoming GeForce RTX 50 series Blackwell graphics cards. The company is testing designs ranging from 250 W aimed at mainstream users and a more powerful 600 W configuration tailored for enthusiast-level performance. The 250 W cooling system is expected to prioritize compactness and power efficiency, making it an appealing choice for gamers seeking a balance between capability and energy conservation. This design could prove particularly attractive for those building small form-factor rigs or AIBs looking to offer smaller cooler sizes. On the other end of the spectrum, the 600 W cooling solution is the highest TGP of the stack, which is possibly only made for testing purposes. Other SKUs with different power configurations come in between.

We witnessed NVIDIA testing a 900-watt version of the Ada Lovelace AD102 GPU SKU, which never saw the light of day, so we should take this testing phase with a grain of salt. Often, the engineering silicon is the first batch made for the enablement of software and firmware, while the final silicon is much more efficient and more optimized to use less power and align with regular TGP structures. The current highest-end SKU, the GeForce RTX 4090, uses 450-watt TGP. So, take this phase with some reservations as we wait for more information to come out.
