I am not sure all the 1,330 voters are 4K gamers.

But it really depends on the load.
Light older game engines - 4 GB
Light old game engines - 6 GB
Light modern game engines - 8 GB
Medium load modern game engines - 12 GB (Far Cry 6 - hd textures, Resident evil 4, Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, Doom Eternal)
Heavy load modern game engines - 16 GB (Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077 overdrive)
Extreme load modern game engines, with ray-tracing, AA - 24 GB

Moved from 8GB (1080) to 20GB and no regrets, seeing as I'm readily exceeding 12 GB VRAM already at 3440x1440 in multiple titles, the list keeps growing.

16GB is not enough for all 4K (On AMD). The 6800XT is blown away at 4K by the 7900XT. With things like Rebar and a fast enough CPU you will see proper usage of that VRAM buffer. Of course Freesync makes everything smooth.

The thing with 4K is do you even need Ray Tracing once you get to 4K? Turning the contrast and saturation up can have a dramatic effect on visuals.

Of course the 6800XT is blown away, there is a serious gap in bandwidth. Its not the VRAM making it faster. Its 512GB/s versus 800GB/s

I am not arguing. It is for those people that say that the 7900Xt should have been called the 7800XT. The VRAM does matter though because TWWH3 is happy to run at 15.8 GB/s on that buffer at 4K.

I like 1440p much better. But when I have my sister over for a day of video games and we connect the pc to the tv, I do have it render in (the tv's native) 4K.

what does 4k have to do with vram? resolution barely makes a difference.
look at diablo 4, 20gb vram usage at any resolution.

I'm willing to bet that voted 6gb or less didn't read that the poll only applies to people playing at 4k (and probably also people choosing the other categories).

This is just plain wrong... vram usage goes up with res, and exponentially so the higher the res. At 8k 24gb vram is often not enough.

24 gb and 1440p. 24 is probably enough for 4k but my gpu doesn't have quite enough power for 4k.

Curious, do you have a downgraded 4090 ?

I voted for "I don't game in 4K".
And I didn't even vote.

These TPU polls never have multiple choice which is a critical flaw. I have several systems and with each passing year, the lower specced ones will probably be able to do 4K gaming, at least for old titles. I don't always play Cyberpunk 2077.

Up until a week ago, I had systems with 10GB, 12GB, and 16GB VRAM on 4K and/or 1440p displays. Today the 10GB VRAM system (an RTX 3080) is on a 1080p display, a very recent change.

A lot of TPU forum participants and even the site staff seem to unaware that people can actually own more than one computer (gasp). And there is pure insanity: there are people who own both Macs and Windows PC. Crazy.

RTX A4000 4K is really only possible with FSR/DLSS since despite the 16GB the raw power is missing, but it's still 4K in my book :)
If you use FSR\DLSS, it isn't 4k at all.
Just because the game says 3840 x 2160 doesn't mean it is.

and for the heaviest game at 1440p, 60 FPS+ is not that easy even for the 4090. i can only imagine what 4k is like.

I mean that my 4090 easily does 4k, even alot of games in 8k... so if yours struggles at 1440p, then it sounds like yours aint running optimally.

A smart person just flicks on dlss, making the image at 8k vastly better looking than native 4k, while at the same time less demanding.

And ofc the same is true for 4k and dlss vs 1440p.

When i was talking about the 4090 not able to do 4K at 60 FPS +, i was talking about 4K native and no DLSS.

It can do 4k native at more than 60 fps in the vast majority of games - we are talking less than 10 games where it can't. And even then you just use dlss, and it still looks alot better than your native 1440p, aswell as runs better.

You can do something to simulate it (not quite the same, but still a stark increase to visual quality) - in nvidia control panel set dsr to 4.00 with 0% smoothing. Then ingame set the res to 5k and set dlss to performance.

My brother has a 4090 strix i gave him, and a 1440p display like you - did this on his pc, and he was stunned by the difference.

As someone who is generally against the idea of upscaling, I'm sorry to say this, but expecting 4K native with ultra RT in the latest games from any hardware is just stupid. Hogwarts Legacy plays fine on a 1660 Ti at 4K with FSR performance if you tune your settings properly. With a little magic in the settings menu, you should have no trouble with a 4090 at all.
