I am not impressed with NVME too, and because of that I added to it a RAMDrive

Yes, we have a bunch of the Asus Hyper m.2 cards, and just recently got a few of those new ones that provide up to 2PB of nvme goodness :)

I'm still waiting on test results from IT, but they seem like real screamers for sure.... so if the 1st batch works out, we will be ordering a buttload of them, as our storage & speed requirements continues to grow at an exponential rate :D
Optane still topping charts
Perhaps, but Optain is a dead, done & dead tech, unless team bluewhoo decides to reincarnate it somehow :)

As is evident from several comments here (including ones you have liked), it very much is about epeen and bragging.

Sure, but context matters i'd say - i generally only do it if people are calling me out.

Regardless, the comment made by @FoulOnWhite is purely epeen. Ironically the money spent on 4x nvme's would have been better spent on a better gpu for an actual performance improvement.

Until the point comes where you can't buy new Optane drives, or new model SSDs are actually faster (they still aren't), Optane is not dead.

except you have no info if FOWs gpu perf is not enough.

i had spare money for upgrades, and decided to go with a new mb/bdie and 2 more drives.
ignoring that even now my 2080S is still enough for al my games, even at 4K, short of stuff like BF V "maxed out".
so why would i sell my WC 2080S for half, and be forced to upgrade to an aircooled (nope) 3000 series (as nothing with WC was out at the time)?

assuming what parts someone else should spend their money on for "improvements"? ok.

true but how often does the average PC enthusiast do that, plus it's still slow if you install on a typical laptop regardless of nvme or SSD

I mean I did reinstall Win98SE so often I just remembered the code for it, and to this day I'm amazed at how fast and easy reinstalling Windows is, even on the lowest of the SSD's, the source being the lowest of USB drives. I installed Windows 11 on a laptop the other day, from a random decade old USB 2.0 stick to a Kingston NV1 (truly the lowest of the NVMe drives) and it's so fast. It's so fast you guys.

same, Ive done it on three laptops in the last few years. One with SSD and two NVMe, all three had various intel 2c/4t CPUs. It's fairly quick, not as quick as a desktop CPU but I'm also not sitting there timing it.

Did i say "3080's are for peasants" ? No, i did not.

But yes, i have a 4090, which gives a significant performance increase over a 3080, unlike nvme over sata.

A bit of an aside form the main thread but:

Honestly I think a lot of people end up conflating NVME with the M.2 slot and SATA with the old school SATA ports.

I love me some M.2 slot because its at least two less cables I have to worry about in any system.

However, for the vast majority of us plebs, whether the interface is NVME or SATA, it doesn't really matter in day to day usage the way it matted when moving from rust to SSD.

Maybe you should have realised my comment was not serious as i used the word peasants, but guess i forgot the /s for those who don't get irony. Ironically at the time the cost difference of anything above a 3080 would have been far more than the cost of the better NVME drives.

My board has 4x NVME slots, and the main reason the the NVME drives was to make all the storage onboard using the better interface, and the plus side of disabling the SATA ports into the bargain.

Lots of people write stuff like that unironically all the time.

And "it was ironic" is always an easy defense of what was said.

Imo why not buy the best storage drives you can, fast drives make a difference to the overall feel of the PC imo. Not saying there is nothing wrong with SATA drives, but no denying the NVME interface is just faster and 500MB/s to over 6000mb/s is a massive difference. For game loads having steam on the 4TB 850X makes a lot of difference compared to the SATA SSD it used to be on.

Nothing wrong with being a peasant either, its the peasants that make the world run, think about it. I am definatley a peasant and proud of it.

I love me some M.2 slot because its at least two less cables I have to worry about in any system.

In my PC i have no SATA devices, and no molex cables even connected. so i can understand this. I love the way all my storage is on my board, it is neater than cables all over.

TBF even most of the cheapest cases these days have cable routing space on the rear side panel and space to hide 2.5" SSD's/separate PSU compartments, rear HDD/SSD drive bays etc, gone are the days of having spaghetti wires all over your case (for the most part!) so cable clutter is not an excuse, I only have 2x NVME slots, both of which are occupied, likewise I also have 1xSATA SSD and 2xHDD's which serve their respective purposes

yeah, major reason for me to go with only mb running at least 4 slots.

its so funny how ppl always say it wont matter for everyday use,
except anyone in my Siege team/group that had the game on a hdd (even if a fast one like WD scorpion/black)
slowed us down loading the map, and most with a single ssd for os+game as well, just not to the same extend.
only when i recommended going for ssd type of drive as the next minor upgrade, did it finally come down to internet/server.

@Marcus L
and enough case with all around glass, or at least some form of mesh on the rear panel,
that would allow cables to be visible.
i have seen enough cases where the 2.5 drives would either be mounted
where i would prefer to have the rad (side panel), or or where they would cover openings you could use for airflow.

ignoring for a moment its up to the person paying for the parts, to determine if cable clutter is an issue or not,
no one else.

while i prefer m.2 so i can get R/W above 600MB/s,
the 2nd major reason is because i care having the least amount of cable visible inside,
needed to make the pc work.

@Wirko
except not every user knows that, and when looking how many found at online retailers
are just listed as M.2 in the title, best case they bought a drive up to 10x slower than it should be (gen 4).

That's right. But this SSD, and the few other remaining M.2 SATA models, have no relation to either NVMe or PCIe.
it's what our Iberian islander muppet friend was talking about
